I went to a friend’s house for dinner and enjoyed buffalo chicken wings and other dishes. When I asked for the buffalo sauce recipe, she told me she bought a bottle of buffalo sauce. As I searched for recipes, they all included hot sauce, Worcestershire sauce, and a lot of butter. To suit my taste, I bought drumsticks instead of the expensive chicken wings because I didn’t want to buy a whole bottle of Worcestershire sauce when I only needed a little. Since I have plenty of hot sauce, I plan to omit the Worcestershire sauce and use half butter and half oil. Additionally, I will add Italian seasoning to create my own sauce. I will cook the drumsticks in my air fryer and serve them with a salad.
Google: “Buffalo sauce is buttery, sweet, spicy and often associated with crispy chicken wings. Buffalo seasoning tastes tangy, spicy, and buttery, touching on competing tastebuds with tangy vinegar and spicy cayenne.” Hmm!!! I have white wine vinegar and cayenne powder to replace Worcestershire sauce and add the spicy tingle.
This recipe is a trial and error with only four chicken drumsticks, saving the others for another use. The buffalo sauce is a bit greasy, with a spicy, comforting, and delicious herb flavour, although not red-orange in colour. Let’s air fryer roast buffalo chicken drumsticks!!!
Ingredients
4 chicken drumsticks
salad
Buffalo sauce
4 Tbs Frank’s Red Hot sauce
2 Tbs olive oil
2 Tbs butter
1 Tbs honey
1 Tsp white wine vinegar
1 Tsp garlic powder
1 Tsp onion powder
1 Tsp cayenne powder
Italian Seasoning
salt
pepper
Method
Melt oil and butter in a small saucepan over low heat. Add honey and stir until well combined. Then add hot sauce, white wine vinegar, garlic powder, onion powder, Italian seasoning, and cayenne powder. Cook the sauce over low heat for 5-7 minutes, stirring occasionally, until heated through and well combined. Allow it to cool completely.
Wash the drumsticks, pat them dry, and place them in a large metal bowl. I didn’t flour my drumsticks and cooked it first. (See Note) if you want to floured it. Spoon 4-6 Tbs of Buffalo sauce over the drumsticks and toss them to coat evenly. Line a baking tray with foil and place the four drumsticks on it. Transfer the drumsticks to the air fryer cup, and place into the air fryer machine. Air fry roast at 180 degrees C for 22-25 minutes.
Halfway through roasting, turn the drumsticks over and continue cooking. After the cooking time is up, check that the chicken meat is fully cooked by pricking the thickest part with a knife. Then, transfer the drumsticks to a plate and serve with salad. Add some oil and buffalo sauce to the salad and drumsticks, and enjoy with a glass of white wine.
Note: Next time best just use butter only and not half and half. Don’t cook too long. Remove saucepan from the heat once butter mixture and honey is well combined. Google: “You can heat this sauce to a hotter temperature, but it will thin out and not cling well to the wings. If the sauce gets too hot, it will break, and you’ll be left with a greasy mess, so don’t let it get too hot.”
To flour drumsticks: Season your flour with salt and pepper (about 1/2 Tsp salt and 1/2Tsp black pepper) and floured chicken drumsticks in the seasoned flour. Preheat oil in a large saucepan to cook your drumsticks. Place drumsticks in hot oil and cook for about 4-5 minutes, then turn them over and cook the other side for about the same time. (You want the drumsticks to get crispy and have a good colour).
Remove the cooked drumsticks to a wire rack or paper towels to drain. Place the cooked drumsticks in a large bowl with your buffalo sauce and toss them to get a good even coating of buffalo sauce on the drumsticks.
