Pan mee soup with fish balls and fish cakes

Went to a nearby Asian grocery, found this pan mee packet; I decided to try it as I had not eaten since umpteen years. Bought fish balls and fish cakes to go with pan mee, and at the last minute, I decided to add black sesame seeds for some extra flavours and colours in my bowl.

Google: “Pan mee, or ban mian, is a popular noodle dish originating from China and prevalent in Malaysia and Singapore, featuring thick, chewy egg noodles served in a flavorful soup or a dry version with chili paste and various toppings. While the dish can be a healthy meal due to ingredients like leafy greens, lean protein, and vegetables, its healthfulness depends on the specific ingredients and preparation. Benefits include providing carbohydrates for energy and a balanced meal when paired with nutritious toppings, but high-calorie versions with excessive fried components can be less healthy.”

“Fish balls are protein-rich, versatile snacks made from minced fish and seasonings, often boiled or fried. They provide lean protein and omega-3 fatty acids, making them a healthy option for muscle repair and heart health. Their flavour and texture appeal to those seeking meat alternatives or convenient meal additions.”

“Fish cakes are made from fish paste or flaked fish mixed with potatoes, vegetables, and eggs, and cooked by frying, baking, or steaming. They are a rich source of protein and omega-3 fatty acids, which benefit brain and heart health, and provide essential vitamins and minerals like vitamin D, B12, iodine, zinc, and potassium. These nutrients support muscle repair, energy production, and immune function, while fish cakes serve as a light, easily digestible option suitable for all ages, including children.”

“Black sesame seeds are small, nutrient-rich seeds loaded with antioxidants, fiber, healthy fats, and essential minerals. They offer benefits such as improved heart health, stronger bones, and enhanced digestive health. Additionally, they promote skin and hair vitality, support liver and kidney function, regulate blood sugar levels, and may protect against DNA damage. High in calcium and other minerals, they help maintain bone strength and may reduce the risk of osteoporosis. The seeds also have anti-inflammatory properties and are valued in traditional medicine for their blood-nourishing capabilities.”

My simple meal without any greens is healthy, comforting, satisfying and delicious. Let’s cook!!!

Ingredients

1 packet of pan mee
5 fish balls
4 fish cakes
1 1/2 Tsp minced garlic
black sesame
water

Method

Put enough water into a pot on medium heat. Bring it to a boil. Open the pan mee packet and the condiments that come with it. Once water is boiled, add in fish balls and fish cakes; cook it for 2-4 minutes. By now the fish balls would puff up/ double in size. Scoop up fish balls and fish cakes into the bowl.

Next, add in the pan mee, garlic and condiments; cook for 6-7 minutes until the pan mee is softened and cooked. Using a slotted spoon, scoop out the pan mee into the prepared bowl. Arrange the fish balls and fish cakes around the pan mee. Then, spoon the soup into the bowl. Scatter black sesame seeds over the top. Enjoy with a cup of green tea!!!
