I bought a packet of 250 g of peeled, pink cooked prawns cocktail with tails on and saw lemon and herb bread crumbs on sale by the cashier. I also had leftover salad, 2 eggs, and enough flour to make crumbed prawns in my air fryer. I’ve been using my air fryer a lot lately, so I’m getting my money’s worth from it.
Google: “Breadcrumbs are made from leftover bread that is ground into fine crumbs. They can be light brown or pink and have a sandy texture when dried. Fresh breadcrumbs are more crumbly. Usually, breadcrumbs are made from toasted bread; they help absorb moisture in recipes, which aids in binding. Bread, especially whole wheat bread, is high in fiber, and eating it can support digestion. This in turn helps control blood sugar and cholesterol levels, reducing the need to eat frequently.”
When using a small air fryer, cook food in batches. Cooking my prawns this way makes timing easier. The manual recommends 180 degrees C for 12-14 minutes for uncooked shrimp. In my first batch, I cooked 6 crumbed prawns for 12 minutes, but they got slightly burnt. For the next batches, I lowered the temperature to 160 degrees C and cooked them for 10-12 minutes, resulting in crispy, golden brown prawns. Serve them with mayonnaise and/or chili sauce, and enjoy with rice or chips. Let’s have air-fried crumbed prawns with salad and a glass of white wine!
Ingredients
250 g prawns cocktail, peeled, pink cooked with tails on
100 g lemon and herb bread crumbs
80 g plain flour
2 eggs, beaten
some salads
some cherry tomatoes
salt
black pepper
spray oil
Method
Wash the prawns, dry them with paper towels, and place them on a paper towel-lined plate. Refrigerate for 10-15 minutes. Meanwhile, line a baking tray that fits in the air fryer with foil, spray it with oil, and set aside.
Next, prepare three shallow plates. In the first plate, add flour and season with salt and pepper. In the second plate, beat the eggs. In the third plate, place the bread crumbs.
Bring out the prawns. Coat 3 prawns in seasoned flour using a food clipper, then dip in the egg mixture with another food clipper. Coat again in seasoned flour, then in beaten egg, and finally in bread crumbs. Ensure each prawn is fully covered in bread crumbs.
Put 6 crumbed prawns in the baking tray without overcrowding. Lightly spray the tops with oil. Place the tray in the cup of air fryer and set it to 180 degrees C for 12 minutes. Halfway through, turn the prawns and spray any dry spots with oil. Continue roasting until cooked, then transfer to a plate and keep warm under foil.
For the next batches, lightly spray the baking tray and reduce the temperature to 160 degrees. Place the crumbed prawns without overcrowding and spray a little oil on top. Insert the baking tray into the cup and then into the machine and roast for 6 minutes. Stop, take out the cup, and turn the prawns halfway through; also spray oil on any dry spots. Return the cup to the machine and roast for another 4 minutes until they are crispy and golden brown.
Plate the salad in the center with two cherry tomatoes on opposite sides. Arrange three crumbed prawns to the left and three to the right of the salad, and place two on top. Serve with a glass of white wine.
Note: Cooking time might vary depending the size of your prawns. Since my prawns is pink cooked, I don’t need high temperature. However, if your prawns are not cook, do increased temperature to 200 degrees C. If you have a small air fryer, say 5.5 or 6 L do roast them in batches. If your air fryer is XL 10 L you might be able to fit all your prawns in. You can serve your prawns with mayonnaise and/or chili sauce. You can eat them with a bowl of rice or chips as side.
