Pane di casa banana, kaya and treacle

East meet West meal

After I had finished eating my pane di casa with avocado spread, figs, cherry tomatoes, and sliced beetroots, my mom came and dropped off this kaya spread. I have not eaten it for ages. I could not wait for a day or two. I took out two slices of pane di casa to spread my pro activ spread with this kaya spread and then kept the kaya back in my pantry. I saw that the treacle was sitting there, crying out to be used.

On my fruit bowl, I took one banana and cut it into slices to add to pane di casa with pro-activ spread, kaya spread, and dolloped some treacle over the banana. I think I won’t be eating dinner tonight. Too full and greedy.

Google: “Kaya is the colloquial term for serikaya in Singapore. It is a sweet, creamy spread or custard made with coconut cream, eggs, sugar and pandan leaves. It is commonly eaten in Singapore as a spread on toasted bread with butter, in a dish known as kaya toast. Variations of kaya can be found in other parts of Southeast Asia. In Malaysia and Indonesia, it is known as serikaya. There are differing accounts on the origins of kaya or serikaya. Some state that it is a Eurasian jam unique to Singapore and Malaysia, and was originally adapted from a Portuguese egg jam. In this adaptation, coconut milk and pandan leaves were used in place of milk and vanilla pods respectively. Another source speculates that kaya is based on the Portuguese dessert, sericaia, which is made from eggs, sugar, milk and cinnamon and shares a similar taste.”

When I crave food that I love even though I am full, there’s always space in my tummy for it. My craving for kaya spread makes me float into heaven. I had a big bright smile and my tummy is so full. It’s satisfyingly delicious. Let’s gobble up your favourite food!!!
