Rump steak is not cheap anymore; it had increased the price. As I am craving for it, I bought it. Today I am trying black pepper rump in air fryer. Got some leftovers kipper potatoes, half green capsicum, one slice of garlic bread (bought), cherry tomatoes and cauliflower at the last minute I decided to throw it in to air fryer. I forgot to spray oil so it charred.
Google: “Rump steak comes from the backside of the cow — perhaps the hardest working part of it’s posterior. As a result, although the rump steak is widely considered to be one of the most flavoursome due to its significant marbling (intermuscular fat), you’ll find that it’s marginally more chewy than the comparable Sirloin or Rib-eye Steak. Because of it’s particularly strong taste profile, rump steak lends itself nicely with milder flavoured sides or sauces.”
I am taking the risk of using air fryer. I have two small baking tray that sit nicely inside my air fryer cup and there are room for the flat metal hole holder for air circulation. I have lined my small baking trays with foil. One for rump steak. The other for garlic bread, potatoes and florets cauliflower.
I have learnt my lesson never forget to spray oil or brush butter on my food before putting in to air fryer. Rump steak is moist though my rump steak did shrink a bit in air fryer. My dinner is colourful, healthy, and delicious. Let’s be courageous to use rump steak in air fryer.
Ingredients
5 florets cauliflower
2 cherry tomatoes
1 rump steak
1 garlic bread (bought)
1 average size kipper, wash clean dry, no need to peel skin
half green capsicum, cut to bite size
oil
spray oil
salt
black pepper
Italian seasoning
Method
Remember to bring rump steak to room temperature. Then par boil kipper potato first.
Bring rump steak to room temperature from fridge 30 minutes. Meantime, parboil the potatoes, place potato in a pot of very well salted water over a medium heat. The potatoes should be completely submerged. There’s no exact timing for this method for it all depends on the size of the potato; and how many potatoes you are using.
Use a knife to insert through the largest potato. Lightly move them around in the water to prevent some potatoes from aren’t cooked while some potatoes are falling apart. Remove any that are cooked. Once your potatoes are done, it’s time to strain them and allow them to dry on paper towel.
While potato drying, I place 1-2 Tbs oil in a microwave safe bowl and cover with microwave lid. Microwave oil for 10 seconds interval up to 30seconds (See Note). Then line two small trays with foil. Preheat the air fryer to 200C for 3 minutes. Pour hot oil in a bowl and combine 2 Tsp Italian seasoning. When potato is cool completely, cut to thin slices. Add slices of potato into the hot oil and Italian seasoning mixture. Toss to coat. Line them in a single layer at the edge of the tray and place cauliflower in the center. I forgot so its charred. (See Note)
Bring out the air fryer cup. It’s a good idea to quickly baste the tops of the potatoes in the hot oil before put the potato and cauliflower baking tray into the bottom flat metal holes. Next place the garlic bread on the flat metal holes. Leaves some holes free for air circulation. Heat garlic for about 4 minutes, then bring out. Bake potato slices for 8 minutes. Then turning over, bake until golden for further 8 minutes and cooked.
Depending on what type of potatoes you are using bake for 15-20 minutes, I am using kipper so I bring out at 16 minutes. Don’t forget to flip cauliflower every 3 minutes. Bake cauliflower for about 6-8 minutes; prick the thickest part with a knife and if it can go through, its cooked.
When the air fryer potato slices and cauliflower florets are done, remove them from the air fryer, and keep warm with a foil. Rub oil, salt, and lot of black pepper on the steak and place it in the prepared foil tray Then put the rump steak tray in the air fryer. Air fry rump steak for 6 minutes. Bring out the cup and turn rump steak over the other side for a further 6 minutes. Let the steak rest for 5-7minutes, before plating up.
Meantime, I plate my potato slices and green capsicum bites on the top corner of my square plate, opposite each other. Then cauliflower florets and garlic bread at the bottom corner. Opposite each other. The two cherry tomatoes in the center opposite the rump steak. Enjoy with a glass of red wine!!!!!
Note: “Preheating the oil is responsible for creating a shatteringly crisp crust upon the potatoes’ entry into the oven. It ensures that the potato begins to crispy immediately, as opposed to soaking up oil. If you put the potatoes into the oven on a cold oven tray with cold oil, your spuds won’t be nearly as crispy.”
Remember to spray oil on cauliflower. Longer time needed that depend on how many cauliflower florets you are putting in your air fryer. Cauliflower can be enjoyed either warm or cold.
