Bought a can of grass jelly and a can of logan to make a cold dessert as the day is extremely hot. I bought them on sale. Then I had to get ice from the petrol kiosk; walking back in the heat, the ice cubes were slowly melting. Quickly put it in my freezer to harden it back. This is my trial-and-error experiment making Asian dessert.
Google: “Grass jelly, also known as leaf jelly or herb jelly, is a jelly-like dessert originating in China. It is commonly consumed in East Asia and Southeast Asia. It is created by using Chinese mesona (a member of the mint family) and has a mild, slightly bitter taste. Grass jelly was invented by the Hakka people who historically used the food to alleviate heat stroke after long days working in the field. The dish was introduced to Southeast Asia by the Chinese diaspora. It is served chilled, with other toppings, such as fruit, or in bubble tea or other drinks. Outside Asia, it is sold in Asian supermarkets.”
I admit I could not finish them all in one go. After a few days I am still eating it. That’s why the second picture the logan had been absorbing the grass jelly flavour and it doesn’t look beautiful. I decided to write up and post after the 5th day of eating it. The first day, I forgot to take the picture of my grass jelly and logan syrup. It was refreshing and cooling to eat. Let’s make them!!!
Ingredients
1 can of grass jelly, about 530 g
1 can of logan, about 450 g
1/2 c castor sugar
1 block of palm sugar, about 1 inch, grated (OPT)
2 Tbs running honey
3 c water
ice cubes
Method
In a medium pot, add caster sugar, palm sugar, and water. Swirl around first before putting on hob on medium heat. Stir regularly. Bring it to a boil and add in honey, stir to mix well. Then lower heat and simmer to allow this to reduce to a thick syrup stirring consistently.
Meantime, open the canned grass jelly and pop the jelly out onto a colander; gives a quick wash. Then put it on cutting board. Note: it’s very slippery! Slice the jelly into half. You can cut them into little cubes or medium cubes or long wormy shapes. Transfer to a serving bowl, with ice cubes, and logan.
When the syrup had cool down, gently spoon into the prepared grass jelly, ice cubes and logan bowl. Gives a couple of stirs and place in fridge to be cool for 2-4 hours. Before serving, stir again. Then spoon onto smaller bowl. Enjoy it cold!!!
