Bought choy sum, kin tok kin (Bean curd pork rolls), and garlic. My sister gave me fresh chili. I found a square piece of bee hoon in my pantry, so I’ll finish it off before getting a new packet.
“Choy sum, or Chinese flowering cabbage, is a nutritious leafy green vegetable rich in vitamins A, C, K, folate, and calcium, while being low in calories and high in fiber. It aids digestion, blood sugar regulation, and weight management, with antioxidants that protect against free radicals and promote bone strength. Choy sum also has lower oxalate levels, enhancing mineral absorption, and can be enjoyed in various dishes like stir-fries, salads, and soups.”
“Bean curd pork rolls, known as “fu pei guen, or kin tok kin” are a popular dim sum dish made with a filling of pork, mushrooms, and vegetables wrapped in dried bean curd skin. Typically steamed or fried, they are served with a savory sauce and are a good source of protein, low in fat, and can include various ingredients like shrimp or tofu. The rolls offer a chewy texture and are easily customizable, while being rich in vitamins and minerals that may help lower cholesterol.”
“Garlic, a member of the onion family, is valued for its unique flavour and health benefits, including low calories and nutrients like vitamin C, vitamin B6, and manganese. It may help prevent illnesses such as the flu, improve blood pressure, and reduce cholesterol levels, particularly LDL cholesterol. Garlic also contains antioxidants that may protect against cognitive decline and support bone health, although more research is required. It is a versatile ingredient that can be easily incorporated into various dishes.”
“Fresh chilies are nutrient-dense fruits containing vitamins, antioxidants, and capsaicin, which provide various health benefits, including immune system support, weight loss assistance, and potential disease risk reduction. They are high in vitamins A and C, boost metabolism, and may lower cholesterol levels while relieving pain from conditions like arthritis. Chilies also possess antioxidant properties, may improve digestion, and could have anti-inflammatory and anti-tumour effects. Moderate consumption can benefit gut health and red blood cell function, while excessive intake may lead to digestive discomfort.”
Simple, healthy and delicious lunch for the weekend. Let’s cook!!!
Ingredients
2 bean curd pork rolls, cut to bite size
1 square block of bee hoon
1/2 bunch choy sum
1/2 Tsp chicken powder
sesame oil
raw garlic, diced
fresh chili, cut to bite size
water
salt
white pepper
Method
Wash choy sum thoroughly and separate the stems and leaves. Bring a pot of salted, boiling water to a boil. Add sesame oil, chicken powder, and garlic and stir for 1 minute. Next, add choy sum stems first and cook for 3-5 minutes, then add the leaves, cook until tender, about 2-4 minutes. Transfer stems and leaves to a bowl.
Using the same pot, add bee hoon, cook stirring for 1 minute. Transfer bee hoon to the bowl with choy sum and then ladle the soup into the prepared bowl. Microwave the bought kin tok kin for 1-1 1/2 minutes and then add into the be hoon soup with choy sum.
Add some more garlic and check seasoning. Added more pepper as I like peppery garlicky flavour. Now add in cut fresh chili. Enjoy with a cup of green tea.
